How Can I Know I’m Saved?

If someone asked you, “Why should God let you into heaven?” what would your answer be?

Many people respond with some version of: “I try to live a good life,” “I go to church,” “I pray,” or “I am doing my best.”

The problem is that the Bible never says eternal life is earned by doing our best. Scripture says the opposite:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” — Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)

A gift cannot be earned. If salvation depended upon our performance, obedience, endurance, or ability to avoid sin, none of us could ever know whether we had done enough.

God offers something far better than uncertainty. He offers a promise.

Jesus Made the Condition Clear

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” — John 6:47 (KJV)

Notice what Jesus did not say. He did not say that whoever behaves well enough, perseveres long enough, reforms his life first, or proves himself worthy receives everlasting life.

He said, “He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”

Not might have. Not could have. Not will eventually receive. Hath everlasting life—a present possession.

Who Is Jesus, and What Did He Do?

Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the promised Messiah. He died for our sins, was buried, and rose again.

“Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.” — 1 Corinthians 15:3–4 (KJV)

Jesus paid the debt we could never pay. Salvation is not a reward for religious achievement. It is everlasting life given freely to the person who believes in Him.

What Does It Mean to Believe?

To believe Jesus is to be persuaded that His testimony is true—to trust Him as the Christ, the Son of God, who guarantees everlasting life to the believer.

The object of saving faith is not your own commitment, sincerity, behaviour, or ability to endure. The object of faith is Jesus Christ and His promise.

Can I Really Know?

Yes. God does not ask believers to live in constant fear about whether they are saved.

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life...” — 1 John 5:13 (KJV)

Your assurance rests on what God has said, not on how strongly saved you feel today.

What About My Failures?

Christians can fail, stumble, and require correction. Those failures may affect fellowship, growth, joy, testimony, and future reward—but they do not turn everlasting life into temporary life.

“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” — John 10:28 (KJV)

Our assurance does not rest upon the strength of our grip on God. It rests upon the strength of His promise and His grip on us.

One Question Remains

Do you believe Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, who died for your sins and rose again—and that He gives everlasting life to everyone who believes in Him?

Jesus promised: “He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.”

If you have believed Him, then according to His own words, you have everlasting life.
