What Does It Mean to See the Son? Assurance and Divine Reciprocity

There is a stunning beauty in the simplicity of the gospel—one that creates a divine symmetry between seeing and being seen. In John 6:40, Jesus says:

“And this is the will of Him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on Him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”

God’s will is not that we perform, strive, or prove ourselves worthy. His will is that we see the Son and believe in Him. And what happens next is breathtaking: God now sees the Son when He looks at us.

This isn’t a poetic metaphor. It is the theological heartbeat of our eternal security. It is divine reciprocity—a holy exchange that secures us not just now, but forever.

The Gospel’s Full-Circle Moment

Once you believe in Christ, God does not merely forgive you. He places you in Christ.

This is the essence of divine exchange:

You saw Jesus for who He truly is—Savior, Redeemer, Son of God.

God now sees you through the lens of who Jesus is—righteous, accepted, holy.

That means your identity, your standing, and your security are no longer based on your performance, but on His perfection.

What Scripture Declares About Your New Identity

This is not wishful thinking or motivational fluff—it is Scripture:

You are in Christ:

“But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption.” — 1 Corinthians 1:30

You are clothed with Christ:

“For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” — Galatians 3:27

You are hidden with Christ in God:

“For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.” — Colossians 3:3

You are counted righteous:

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” — 2 Corinthians 5:21

God is well pleased with His Son:

“This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” — Matthew 3:17

So when God looks at you, He does not see your flaws, failures, or fears. He sees His Son. That’s the lens through which He views you. That’s the identity He has given you.

The Implication: Your Security Is Found in Who God Sees

Many believers live with a nagging fear that God is disappointed in them—that He’s watching from above with arms crossed, waiting for them to stumble. But that’s not the God of grace. That’s not the Father who placed you in Christ the moment you believed.

“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus…” — Romans 8:1

There is no glowering judgment, no condemning tone, no unrelenting standard left to meet. The judgment fell at the cross. And now God sees you as righteous—not because of what you do, but because of who you’re in.

Mirror of Truth: What You See vs What God Sees

You may still see weakness in yourself. You may fall short. You may struggle to forgive yourself, let alone feel "faithful." But God’s view is anchored not in your self-perception, but in your Christ-perception.

You saw the Son and believed.

The Will of the Father in John 6:40

Now God sees the Son in you.

“Beloved, now are we the sons of God...” — 1 John 3:2

This is the joy of the Gospel. Not that we climb our way up to God—but that He came down to us, and placed us in the only One who could never be condemned: Jesus Christ.

Final Thought: The Ultimate Assurance

Your salvation is secure because your identity is sealed. Your future is bright because your position is fixed. And your confidence can be unshakable because your Judge sees His Son.

This is Divine Reciprocity.

This is Gospel Security.

This is Grace.
